Bengali on the NYC ballot

Language access at the polls.

ASAAL was the only organization to testify at the Board of Elections for Bengali under Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act — adding interpreters in Bengali, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, and Gujarati on election days from November 2012.

Two Eid holidays · NYC schools

Recognition for our communities.

The only South Asian organization to testify at the City Council in 2008 for the Eid school holidays, established March 4, 2015 — and a supporter of the statewide Diwali holiday in 2023.

Masks distributed · COVID-19

Community service when it counted.

During the pandemic ASAAL distributed over 380,000 masks, 16,500 sanitizers, and 14,000 boxes of food in mosques, gurdwaras, and temples across New York City.
